Definitely, there are places where working is an experience of another kind.
At moviepilot, we have a nice tradition that when it's someone's birthday or an intern is leaving or whatever the occasion is, the person involved 'has to' bring a cake. Six months ago, we started -more as a joke- a tumblr blog to feature the cakes and our full-mouthed colleagues eating them.
No matter how meaningless this other social media initiative might have seemed at the beginning, its benefits are starting to become more and more obvious:
- People like good feedback: having your cake and yourself featured started to work as a powerful incentive for them to actually bake and bring cakes and make it worth the hassle. Now, getting content for our cake blog alone has almost become sufficient ground to have cake at the office.
- It is fun! And watching ourselves having fun seems to double it. A company blog can work as an efficient self-fulfilling prophecy when it gets about co-workers having a good time together. At moviepilot, it became a central part of our firm's culture. And clearly, starting Monday morning with a colorful box of birthday donuts is nothing one wants to complain about...
