Bringing audiences to independent cinema in Europe via digital & social media

Kurz und schmerzlos: Future Shorts Festival in Berlin Supermarkt

Although I’ve known about the Future Shorts folk for a while, I had never attended one of their events. Until Friday night. I joined the Future Shorts screening in Berlin-Wedding creative studio Supermarkt with a few friends for a good start into the weekend.
What does it take to organise a successful film night? Well, the concept behind Future Shorts is simple and brilliant:
- A neat selection of excellent short films- most of them nominees or prize-winners at renowned film festivals like Sundance- sold for a modest sum as a package to whichever venue wants to host the event.
- A cool place to host such an event
- Savvy social media communication to promote the event
- A nice crowd wishing to be entertained - for only five euros (and free popcorn).

At the end, we all gathered next door in the lovely B-side bar to discuss the movies over a drink.
See here for the selected movies.
My heart leaned towards the very last short, Sam Taylor-Wood teenie-punk-(first)-romance „Love me more“. Aww, British cinema always gets me!

Future Shorts is totally the kind of initiative that makes the most of digitalisation and social media to create win-win-win(-win-win,etc) situations:
Short films get another chance to expand their audience beyond the smaller reach of niche film-buffs or festival attendants. In our „keep it simple“ era I also see a powerful potential for short films to cement themselves a base of common cultural references internationally with an equally integrative force as long feature blockbusters or around-the-world-buzzing youtube videos.

Venues enjoy Future Shorts' expertise in social media and online communication. They benefit from their broadened network and increase their visibility and “cool” factor for a younger audience on both local and international levels.

Social per nature, the events allow short film lovers as well as casual cinema goers to share a different kind of cinematic experience made of high quality entertainment and a lot of fun! At small costs.

If you are a venue and want to host a Future Shorts screening, do get in touch!
